چکیده
The functional Schrödinger equation (FSE) for QCD gives a unique perspective on generation of a gluon mass m, as required for center vortices. The FSE, which yields a special d=3 gauge action, combined with lattice calculations strictly in d=3 give a value for the dimensionless ratio of d=3 coupling to mass g2 3/m. From this we infer a reasonably accurate value for the d=4 running coupling g2(0) in the region of low momentum where it is nearly constant. The result, consistent with other estimates, is too low to drive chiral symmetry breaking (CSB) for quarks in a standard gap equation that has no explicit confinement effects. We recall and improve on old work showing that confinement implies CSB for quarks, and consider CSB for test (that is, quenched) Dirac fermions in the adjoint representation. Here the previously-found value of g2(0) is large enough to drive CSB in a gap equation, which we relate to the presence of center vortices (non-confining, for the adjoint) and nexuses that drive fermionic zero modes. We discuss the extension of adjoint CSB to finite temperature. Email: [email protected]

Construction of the effective Poincaré algebra
We derive expressions for Poincaré group generators using preturbative similarity renormalization group procedure for Hamiltonians. We show that generators obtained in second-order perturbation theory satisfy required commutation relations in weak sense, i.e. in matrix elements between states of finite invariant masses. ∗Talk to be delivered at 12th Nuclear Physics Summer School and Symposium “...

-We review and comment on some of the existing approaches to low-pT particle production based on ideas of quantum chromodynamics. We focus on the relationships between the various theories and, in particular, note the points of overlap between them. Constraints upon the models coming from deep inelastic and e+eannihilation data are discussed. In the last eight years high energy physics has focu...
متن کاملA Finite Particle Number Approach to Quantum Physics
Bridgman has contended that the "inside of an electron" cannot be given operational meaning. The basic reason for this is taken to be that when relativity is coupled to quantum mechanics the uncertainty principle in energy requires the existence of an indefinitely large number of particulate degrees of freedom corresponding to particles of finite mass when any system is examined at short distan...

An update of measurements of the strong coupling constant αs is given, representing the status of September 2002. The results convincingly prove the energy dependence of αs and are in excellent agreement with the expectations of Quantum Chromodynamics, QCD. Evolving all results to the rest energy of the Z boson, the new world average of αs(MZ) is determined from measurements which are based on ...
متن کاملInhomogeneous color superconductivity and the cooling of compact stars
In this talk I discuss the inhomogeneous (LOFF) color superconductive phases of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). In particular, I show the effect of a core of LOFF phase on the cooling of a compact star.
